Thinking about getting a new phone, Nexus 5 or new HTC One.

I'm looking to replace my Nexus 4 which has gotten pretty beat up. I'm eligible for an upgrade from AT&T so I can get the new HTC One for $200 or I can buy a Nexus 5 straight from google for $350-$400 depending on what internal memory size I get.

The main disadvantage for me of the HTC One is that it has a stupid skin installed on it over Android. I love the stock android experience on my current Nexus 4 and I'd like to keep it. But the HTC One is cheaper, and has expandable storage. The Nexus 5 has stock Android, I'm not locked into a contract and a better form factor. Anyone have any thoughts?

Also I know it will be hard for some of you but I will dismiss any comments telling me to get an iPhone. It's too small for my hands and I'm fully invested in the google ecosystem and have no desire whatsoever to switch to Apple.

I'd go with the Htc One personally. No reason besides it looks better.

I have an HTC One, and it is glorious. The screen is miles better than any I've ever seen, the speakers are wonderful, it is very fast to use, and it looks and feel good and very high quality. I would highly recommend it. I'm not particular about my running systems, so I will buy whichever iPhone/windows phone/Android I like, and having used Apple Ipods/Iphones for a few years, this thing is better. I would take it over the Nexus.

Do you have the new HTC One or the one that came out last year? I really dislike the idea of a silly skin over Android, I don't understand why manufacturers continue to make their products worse this way.

I got mine about eight months ago, so that would be last year's. I don't know what updates have been done for this years.

I upgraded to the Nexus 5 from a Nexus S, and like it. My wife will likely be getting a samsung galaxy s5 hey this summer. The five is substantially larger than the ass so one handed operation in the little more difficult.but for the next to experience I love it.

I would get the Nexu 5. I too hate the skin, but the One does look pretty nice. Like you say, stock Android and better form factor would win out. I've never really needed expanded storage, though it is nice to have the option.

I'd say go Nexus 5 because I love the stock Android experience, and I really don't like the skins HTC puts on it.

I have the Nexus 5. Its a great phone which has been rock solid. I liked being able to pay for it straight up. I don't know much about the HTC, you probably can't go wrong with either.

I'd recommend the LG Optimus G (If it's still on sale, I'm not sure) I have it, and love it. Big, clear screen, 32gb of storage standard, and 2gb of ram. It runs Android perfectly all the time. The battery lasts all day for me and it has a 13mp camera.

I'm a huge proponent of stock Android over some skinned version, so for that reason alone I'd certainly prefer the Nexus. That's ignoring the price difference though. If you get the Nexus straight from Google, can you get a discount on your (future) contract?

My girlfriend has a Nexus 5 and my cousin has the original HTC One. I'd pick the Nexus. Stock Android, very light, 1080p display looks AMAZING, and the processor is very snappy. The only thing I can't vouch for on the Nexus is the camera. Poor performance on dim to low light and the flash can be very overwhelming therefore overexposing a lot of shots... The One feels heavier and the screen has very unnatural looking tones to me. Overall the Nexus wins in my book. Even the new HTC I wouldn't get just because of their stupid Sense UI.

HTC's Sense skin is actually pretty minimal and slick. You can turn Blinkfeed off if you want. I've honestly missed it whenever I flashed my One to stock Android.

I didn't think I'd give a shit about the stereo speakers but for me they've proven to be one of those features you don't know you want until you get it and you suddenly find yourself playing podcasts and music all over the place because hey you've got your phone with you why not?

edit: one thing to take into account though is the One (2013) is a heavy phone compared to a Galaxy or Nex5. It's fine in your pants or a jacket but not much fun to carry around in a shirt pocket or something.

I have a Samsung Galaxy SIII, and my wife got a HTC One for a replacement to an outdated phone. She's pretty content with it. It's a bit larger than the SIII, and in some ways better, other ways not so much. I was surprised to see it only had 16Gb of internal storage compared to the SIII 32. The processor is slightly better (at least Verizon's dumbed-down versions), and the screen is larger, with similar quality.

I agree, I'm not sure if I like the skin it uses, but a quick rooting would take care of that, probably. I haven't looked into it, I plan on replacing my SIII with a SIV (S4?) or 5

i have the new htc one. It's fantastic and I absolutely recommend it over anything.

You can always load the google play edition rom if you're into that.

On ATT don't you save $15/mo by bringing your own device? That could make the N5 significantly cheaper to own and you won't be locked in for 2 years.

You may want to check out the OnePlus One being released later this month. Killer specs and running CyanogenMod right out of the box.
